MATCH PREVIEW

Marseille will host Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League (EL) round-of-16. The French side have not reached the 1/8 finals of this competition since its inaugural running in 2009/’10 .
For their part, Athletic Bilbao may see the EL as a welcome break from their domestic duties, as they have only won once in the last nine La Liga (LL) games. The Basque side will be particularly eager to improve on their run in last season’s EL, when they were knocked out at the round-of-32 stage against APOEL Nicosia.
Marseille’s performances in Europe home and away this season have been polar opposites! While they have failed to win any of their away clashes (D3, L3), the ‘Olympians’ have won five of their six European clashes at the Stade Vélodrome so far this season, drawing once.
The French side have lost 50% of their home games against Spanish teams in European competition, while the Basque side have only won one out of four trips to France. Marseille have also scored 13 goals in six home games in the EL this season.
Unlike their opponents, the ‘Leones’ are undefeated this season away from Bilbao (W3, D3), averaging almost two goals per game.
Players to watch: Valère Germain hadn’t scored a goal in the EL until the knockout round began, when he struck twice to clinch Marseille’s qualification to this stage.
Bilbao’s top scorer in all UEFA competitions, Aritz Aduriz, has scored seven in his last six EL games.
Stat attack: Marseille and Bilbao last met in the EL in the round-of-32 of the 2015/’16 season. On that occasion it was Bilbao who advanced to the next round after a 2-1 aggregate victory.
In the first leg of that tie, Athletic Bilbao beat Marseille at their home ground, which is the last home defeat in Europe for the French side.
