Sunday’s Eredivisie action is rounded off with Excelsior’s short trip to face Feyenoord in what promises to be a tasty Rotterdamse derby game!
Historically, this is the least heated derby in the city between the three clubs as the rivalry between Sparta and Feyenoord runs deeper, but do not tell an Excelsior fan that as they consider it a proper rivalry.
These clubs are linked in a partnership spanning back to 1979, in which Excelsior are a ‘feeder club’ for Feyenoord. Most notably Robin van Persie moved between the clubs.
Excelsior even have a stand in their stadium named after van Persie, who only featured for their youth team briefly and who now plays for their local rivals.
Since Excelsior’s return to the Eredivisie in the 2014/’15 season they have lost all but one game against Feyenoord (W1, L6).
Despite having the worst home record in the league, Excelsior are a different beast away from home where have picked up 25 points. To put this in perspective, the reigning champions Feyenoord have picked up just 27 points at home this term.
Players to watch: Steven Berghuis (FEY) has contributed to 22% of his side’s goals this term (12/54), plus with 11 assists he remains the player directly involved in the most Eredivisie goals this season (23).
Mike van Duinen has scored three goals from his last four Eredivisie appearances and is due to return to the Excelsior midfield following a suspension.
Stat attack: De Kuip is a fortress. Feyenoord are unbeaten there in 28 of their last 31 Eredivisie games.
Over 2.5 goals have been scored in total in six of Feyenoord’s last seven games, as well as in nine of Excelsior’s last 11 away from home (Eredivisie).
Excelsior have won their last three away games but have never won away to Feyenoord in ten attempts. They conceded 25 goals in this time, scoring just four themselves.
