After suffering a major upset against QPR (4-1 away), The Canaries (NOR) were able to quickly recover and beat Aston Villa at Carrow Road (3-1) in what was their biggest win this season. Sunderland, on the other hand, remain inside the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw against Leeds.
Playing at the Stadium of Light has not proved to be much of an advantage for Sunderland, which is highlighted by their home record of: W2, D6, L12. The score in both wins was a meagre 1-0, and only three of their last ten games at home have produced more than 2.5 goals.
Sunderland will not have a better chance to make it a third home win of the season. Only three Norwich players have scored more than one goal in away matches. and Norwich’s last five away matches have produced a goal difference of -4.
From a tactical perspective, Sunderland’s strengths lie on the right side, with George Honeyman, Callum McManaman and Lynden Gooch providing the attack from that flank. They have scored 17 goals from set-piece situations.
Sunderland have changed formations often this season. 4-2-3-1 has been used in the majority of matches (seven) but 4-1-4-1 was the one adopted last round and has been their most successful one so far (W2, D1, L3).
Players to watch: Josh Murphy scored a goal and provided an assist in the last round against Aston Villa.
Aiden McGeady is Sunderland’s top scorer with seven goals. He is also their leader in assists (four) and chances created (44).
Stat attack: In terms of aerial duels won, Sunderland have the edge with 21.6 against Norwich’s 17.2.
Both Sunderland and Norwich have averages of 1.1 goal per game this season.
