Two sides set to cap a satisfactory season with European football qualification face off here in excellent form. This should be an absolute cracker!
Having dethroned Milan from the last of the EL spots all thanks to a splurge of three wins on the bounce, Atalanta’s quest to secure more European football will be tested to new limits at the Stadio Olimpico, where the hosts have lost just twice in their last ten games (W6, D2), including five victories from their last six home matches.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side (ATL) have shown they can mix it up with the big boys in SA, winning five of their last eight games (D2, L1) and going unbeaten in their last five. Should they come away with maximum points here, it would be the first time they have recorded four successive wins this season.
Fourth-placed Lazio (70 pts, W25, D7, L7) are just about getting over the finish line in their battle for CL qualification with Internazionale, having picked up 13 pts from a possible 15 in their last five outings. A tenth home win would be a massive, vital boost for them in that battle with the 2010 Champions League winners.
Players to watch: Ciro Immobile is SA’s leading scorer with 29 goals. In his last eight games for Lazio, he has scored seven times.
Musa Barrow and Remo Freuler, both of who have seven goals this season, account for four of the last eight goals Atalanta have scored.
Stat attack: Lazio have had a significant upper hand in the 43 games between them and Atalanta, winning on 20 occasions and holding Atalanta to a draw 12 times.
The hosts have also won six of their last seven home matches against Atalanta in SA.
